Tesla Time and Dog Years

We’ve all heard the term “dog years” – that 1 human year is equal to 7 dog years. You’ve also probably heard of Elon Musk (if you haven’t please, please, please leave your home).

Musk, who heads Tesla, SpaceX, and the Boring Company, is constant in the news these days for his innovative ideas and leaps towards a future that thus far has only existed in movies and books – self-driving cars, life in space, you name it.

In Elon Musk’s world, 1 year for him is equal to 7 years for the rest of us. If you look at his timelines for accomplishing his dreams, his projected targets are a little out-of-whack with most companies. Granted, Elon Musk gets stuff done.

For instance, while Ford, Uber, and Volvo are working towards a self-driving car with a projected goal of 2021, Tesla plans to have a car drive itself across the U.S. by the end of 2017. That’s 1:4.

Another example – NASA plans to get humans to Mars sometime in the 2030s; Elon Musk expects SpaceX to commence manned missions by 2025 and start a civilization on the red planet by the 2060s. For those keeping track, a ratio of 1:8.

Basically, the math indicates overall that Musk’s projected goals compare to everyone else’s at a ratio of about 1:7.83 – pretty close to the difference between humans and our favourite furry friends.

So yeah, Elon Musk makes most of us feel pretty average. On the other hand, the more we know, the faster technology develops.

This means new ways of experiencing the world and expanding our expectations of ourselves as learners and as creators.

In digital marketing we are always learning, developing, and looking for new and amazing solutions for clients – and if those solutions don’t exist, we create that solution ourselves.

So, the quicker things move, the more fun we get to have trying out new platforms and broaden the ways in which we can bring companies and brands to the spotlight.

It’s also pretty awesome that we get to watch the world and the tech of our dreams develop before our eyes, and maybe even live to experience it!
