Social media may be a constantly evolving marketing tool and means of communication; however, there are some myths that seem to have stuck.

For those who have little experience with social media and find it daunting, some of the reasons that might have you stressing may not be true.

There are about 5 Social Media myths we can think of:

  1. Social media is a separate marketing strategy.

Social media is just one avenue to reach a target audience or audiences. If you understand those audiences, there are other ways to reach them.

That said, all of your strategies should still work cohesively together – whether print, digital, or an in-person pitch. Your branding is everything, so stick to it.

  1. You need hundreds of thousands of followers to be successful.

The number of followers you have can certainly help promote and expand your social network and brand awareness. However, all of those follows mean nothing if there is no engagement.

The point of social media for businesses is not to have all the followers, it is to find leads, create meaningful connections, and convert those leads into loyal customers.

  1. You need to be on every social platform.

Marketing is not about throwing the most about of seeds to the wind. You will have the most success by understanding your target audiences and focusing your energy and time in those places.

Spreading yourself too thin will not reap good results. Smart decisions, for good results.

  1. It’s too late to learn.

At Y5, we believe it’s never too late to learn.

Even if social media does not come naturally to you, with time, patience, and strategy, there is no reason why you can’t learn.

We’ve worked with a lot of clients to train them in, at least, some basic social media skills so that they a) understand what we’re trying to accomplish on their behalf, and also b) that they can help themselves if they choose to maintain their social media profiles themselves.

  1. All modern marketing is Social Media Marketing.

We’re big fans of the face to face. It’s not always possible, and social media can really extend your reach, but ultimately, it’s you who makes the sale.

That human connection is valuable. One thing that makes Y5 so special is the environment – people really love coming to our office. We’re friendly, and fun, and we have a puppy AND a FREE vending machine.

At the end of the day, our customers place a lot of trust in us.

For many clients, they point of being on social media is to engage their audience enough that they can meet their leads face-to-face to provide the solutions their target audience is looking for.
